On July 31, Trident Technical College hosted Youth Apprenticeship Signing Day where 52 incoming Youth Apprenticeship students joined one of the 17 Youth Apprenticeship pathways offered through Trident Tech.
The Youth Apprentice Program is a partnership between the Charleston Metro Chamber, Trident Technical College and Apprenticeship Carolina. Participants will finish high school with two years of paid work experience, two years of industry specific college classes and zero student loan debt. The Charleston Metro Chamber, through Accelerate Greater Charleston, contributes funding for Youth Apprentices to cover classes and textbooks and pathway-specific supplies.
The Youth Apprentice pathways are Industrial Mechanics, Machining, Culinary Arts, Hotel Operations, EMT, CNA or Pre-Nursing, Medical Office Assistant, Computer Programming, Computer Networking, Cyber Security, Civil CAD Technician, Automotive, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Security and Pre-Law Enforcement, Bookkeeping and Pre-Accounting and Engineering Assistants for engineering pathway and engineering technician.
“We are extremely grateful for strong partnerships with our school districts and Trident Tech to be a part of the Youth Apprentice programs and work together to create pathways to careers for these students,” said Bryan Derreberry, President and CEO for the Charleston Metro Chamber. “Thank you to each of our Accelerate Greater Charleston investors whose investment has allowed us to contribute to funding for a total of 245 youth apprentices in the last five years.”
Speakers at the event included Bryan Derreberry from the Charleston Metro Chamber, Dr. Mary Thornley from Trident Technical College and a panel including Dr. Gerrita Postlewait, Superintendent of Charleston County School District, Mike King, BU Supplier Quality Director with Cummins Turbo Technologies and former youth apprenticeship students Shannon Brennan, Byrone Porcher and Stephen Maddy. Their discussion shed light on the importance of demanding more from your school systems, the value Youth Apprentices add to an organization and the changes it makes for these young students to attain a career.
The new Youth Apprenticeship students, and those returning for their second year, make up 92 Youth Apprenticeship students working with 54 companies for the 2018/2019 school year.
