120 Teachers To Attend Patriots Point’s 7th Annual Teacher Recertification Conference on the USS Yorktown
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – On June 12, 2018, 120 teachers from across South Carolina will board the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum to attend the museum’s two-day Teacher Recertification Conference. Of the teachers attending, more than 70 will stay overnight on the historic aircraft carrier and sleep in the same racks that the ship’s crew used while the vessel was in service.
The 11-session Teacher Recertification Conference will feature award-winning children’s book author Tara McClary Reeves as guest speaker. Reeves will share the story behind her popular book, “Is Your Daddy a Pirate.” The children’s book was based on her own experience as the daughter of a Vietnam veteran who returned from the war with severe injuries.
Workshop topics include cyber security, computer coding, augmented reality, biology, science and history. In addition, there will also be a special session on storytelling that will be instructed by Charleston musician Ann Caldwell.
During the final event of the conference, former South Carolina and United States Representative Henry E. Brown Jr. will join Patriots Point staff in presenting the first ever Education Encouragement Award to a teacher attending the conference who has proven history of supporting her students and South Carolina educators. This surprise award will be a first for the annual conference.
