Summer ’s here and, though the time is right for dancing in the street, it’s also time for some perspective regarding our region’s growth.
Our manageable economic and population growth (roughly 2.2% per year) has positioned the Charleston region to become one of the fastest-growing air travel markets in the country.
Just a few months ago, four airlines announced additional routes to Charleston International Airport.
- American Airlines: daily service to Chicago and a third daily rotation to Dallas-Fort Worth
- Southwest Airlines: daily service to St. Louis and a second daily route to Nashville
- Delta Air Lines: nonstop flights to Boston (weekly)
- Frontier Airlines: nonstop flights to Chicago (twice each week)
With the addition of these routes, Charleston International Airport, which is also served by JetBlue Airlines, United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, is expected to reach a record 4 million travelers coming and going this year.
The good news keeps coming as Frontier Airlines will launch nonstop service to Minneapolis starting in August. The best part? A roundtrip ticket will cost about $100.
That growth in air service is fueled, in part, by Charleston’s draw of foodie travelers, history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts from across the country and the world. But it’s also due in significant measure to our strong business base and the growing population that travels outbound from Charleston.
Our growth and balance make our market viable for airlines to expand service. This is great news for our economy…and those of us who like direct flights!
