The 2013 honorees – innovators who take chances, push boundaries and stretch limits for success – are:
Trailblazer Award: Benefitfocus
Beacon Award: The City of Charleston’s King Street Restoration Project
Pillar Award: The InterTech Group
Rock Star Award: The Kiawah Island Golf Resort 2012 PGA Championship
Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award: Wilbur Johnson, Managing Partner, Young Clement Rivers LLP
The award recipients will be formally honored at the Chamber’s annual Honors Night Reception Thursday, September 26, 2013 before an audience of members of the business community, elected officials and other community leaders. The event will be held at the Riviera at Charleston Place in downtown Charleston from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
The Trailblazer Award honoring Benefitfocus: recognizes an organization that has created a cutting-edge product or service. Benefitfocus is helping companies find a better way to manage their benefits. From consumer engagement and education, to enrollment, communication and billing, Benefitfocus is the largest benefits technology provider in the U.S., with more than 15 million consumers and 300,000 employers using the cloud-based platform.
The Beacon Award honoring The City of Charleston’s King Street Restoration Project: recognizes a project or structure that elevates aesthetics and improves quality of life. The Upper King Street revitalization project gained a major supporter with the election of Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley in 1975. In his first mayoral campaign, Riley “promised to reverse the flow of business from downtown Charleston to the suburban shopping malls by revitalizing the central business district.”
The Pillar Award honoring The InterTech Group: recognizes an organization known for long-standing excellence. Since its inception, The InterTech Group has been inspired by Jerry Zucker’s love of science and technology, his desire for synergies and his visionary foresight. Each employee of the InterTech team is considered to be part of a large family of an organization invested in their personal growth in both the workplace and in the community.
The Rock Star Award honoring The Kiawah Island Golf Resort 2012 PGA Championship: recognizes an organization that has experienced a significant achievement resulting in a positive impact on the region. While it was Rory McIlroy who hoisted the Wannamaker Trophy at the tournament, the region and community also emerged from the world-class event as champions.
The Joseph P. Riley or “Big Joe” Leadership Award honoring Wilbur Johnson, Managing Partner of Young Clement Rivers LLP: celebrates a visionary leader doing extraordinary work to strengthen the community; an outstanding community volunteer that has demonstrated a lifetime of leadership.
