Breaking News: Hate Crimes Bill Passes the House

April 7, 2021

Today by a vote of 79-29, H.3620, better known as the Hate Crimes bill, received second reading in the House of Representatives. This is a step in the right direction for one of the Chamber’s top priorities. Tomorrow, the bill will receive its final reading in the House and will move to the Senate, meeting the crossover deadline.

This legislation is long overdue in our state and we believe it will make life better for all of our residents. The bill will help bring about real and lasting change, economic prosperity for all of our neighbors and safe, thriving and equitable communities.

We want to thank Speaker of the House Jay Lucas, Chairman of Judiciary Chris Murphy, lead sponsor Wendell Gilliard and our legislative delegation for their support of this legislation. We look forward to continuing this work in the SC Senate in the coming weeks to send the bill to the Governor’s desk.
