Congressman Joe Cunningham Awarded the Jefferson-Hamilton Award for Bipartisanship

June 10, 2020

This week, Congressman Joe Cunningham received the US Chamber of Commerce’s Jefferson-Hamilton Award for Bipartisanship, which recognizes those members of Congress who in their actions have demonstrated a willingness to work across the aisle in support of common objectives. The Award is based on the number of bills a member cosponsors introduced by a member of the opposite party. Congressman Cunningham scored a 99%. The top 20 House members between both parties receive this award.

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce wants to congratulate Congressman Cunningham for this award. In difficult times like these, it is critical that our leaders from local governments all the way to the halls of Congress work across party aisles for the benefit of the American people.

“Anytime our Chamber faces an issue at the federal level, whether it be a military issue facing Joint Base Charleston, a business climate issue or, more recently, when our small businesses were having issues with Paycheck Protection Program, Congressman Cunningham was there to listen to the concerns and work to find a solution,” said Bryan Derreberry, President and CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber. “Congratulations Congressman Cunningham on being honored with this well-deserved award.”

More about The Jefferson-Hamilton Award for Bipartisanship

America’s elected leaders should be men and women of conviction and principle who are also able to find common ground with those with whom they disagree. Since the days of Jefferson and Hamilton, America has benefitted from leaders who found ways to work together despite their differences.

The new Jefferson-Hamilton Award for Bipartisanship recognizes those members of Congress who in their actions have demonstrated a willingness to work across the aisle in support of common objectives.

MethodologyThis award is based on the number of bills (excluding those formally opposed by the Chamber) a member cosponsors introduced by a Member of the opposite party. Members are ranked relative to the performance of all other members of their party, with the top ranked in both parties earning 100%. The 10 top scoring senators and 20 top scoring House representatives (apportioned by party) earn this award.
