Things to Come for the City of North Charleston

The government relations team’s work can be described using three words: inform, access, and advocate. The ACCESS series is a great example of how we do this work. Throughout the ACCESS series, Chamber members will have the opportunity to interact personally with and ask questions of the top local elected officials around the Charleston Metro Region.

Elected leaders will answer questions, address current issues facing their community and ways the business community can help. Following the program, members and elected leaders are invited to join us for a happy hour reception.

We kicked off this year’s ACCESS series with Mayor Summey to hear about the successes and challenges the City of North Charleston is facing. North Charleston is the third largest city in South Carolina and the #1 city for retail in the state! The city will celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.

Please see below for some key takeaways:

  • Public Works and Infrastructure
    • Building a new aquatic center and gym at the Danny Jones Center
    • Building an all-inclusive park to support children of all abilities
  • Lowcountry Rapid Transit
    • Council has been very supportive
    • Mayor Summey believes it is a great opportunity to increase affordable housing along the corridor
  • Finances
    • Every employee at the city got a $2k pay raise in April
    • The mayor believes to ask businesses to come here and pay a livable wage, the city must set an example and do the same
    • The city is considering a 3-millage tax increase to add over 700 cameras to help combat crime and reduce homicides. They are still in discussion phase and no decisions have been finalized.
  • How can the business community help North Charleston?
    • Hire local
    • Engage in job training
    • Share stories about how great it is to do business in North Charleston

The Chamber is thankful for our great partnership with the City of North Charleston and would like to extend a special thank you to Mayor Summey for being our first ACCESS guest of the year. We look forward to seeing the good things to come for the city and partnering to address its greatest challenges.
