Roper St. Francis names new president and CEO

Written by CRBJ

After the previous candidate stepped down before he even started, Roper St. Francis Healthcare has named a new president and CEO. For the first time, he’s also a physician.

On Tuesday, the not-for-profit health care system announced in a news release that Dr. Jeffrey DiLisi will assume the role of president and CEO beginning Dec. 7.

He will take over for Jim Berg, the interim president and CEO that stepped in as of January to replace Lorraine Lutton following a restructuring in 2019.Advertisement

RSFH thought they filled the position in April with the selection of Brian White, but three months later White shared that he would be unable to start in order to focus on his health and family, according to a spokesman for Roper St. Francis.

The national search for a permanent replacement continued with DiLisi being selected for the position. The Pitman, N.J., native garnered national attention for his advancements in health care quality and patient safety, Roper said in a news release.

“Roper St. Francis Healthcare is a flourishing healthcare system with a history of service to the community, and I could not be more honored to join this team at this moment in its history,” DiLisi said. “Roper St. Francis Healthcare has a tradition of quality and pride in its care, and I am humbled to serve alongside its tremendous caregivers.”

DiLisi most recently served as senior vice president and chief medical officer of Virginia Hospital Center, a 394-bed not-for-profit, teaching hospital in Arlington, Va. During his time there, Virginia Hospital Center was named one of the Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures for consistently high levels of evidence-based practice.

Additionally, DiLisi was responsible for major procedural and ancillary areas accounting for 60% of the hospital’s revenue and helped the hospital apply to and join the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

“With Dr. DiLisi, we have a medical leader who has delivered both the greatest and most tragic news to patients and their loved ones, and this experience brings an invaluable patient-centered perspective and sense of compassion,” Dr. Brian Cuddy, chairman of the Roper St. Francis board of directors, said. “Dr. DiLisi recognizes the enormous responsibility of caring for people and keeping our community healthy because he’s lived it his entire life.”

DiLisi earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Duke University, followed by his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and further received an MBA from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke.

“Roper St. Francis Healthcare is able to tap into a world-class system with methods of care that have already proven valuable in other markets around the country,” DiLisi said. “I look forward to utilizing Bon Secours Mercy Health’s knowledge and expertise so that Roper St. Francis Healthcare is a model for delivering high-quality care at an affordable cost to patients.”
