We are lucky to live in a region that offers a lot of opportunities to find the career of your dreams. There are a large amount of high-demand job opportunities available currently that need to be filled. But, why do they stay vacant for an extended period of time, or get filled with less qualified talent?
A major factor in the disconnect between the emerging workforce and employer labor demand is a lack of information. The Chamber is committed to addressing this information gap by providing students and families with information about how to prepare for college and career after high school.
Developed in partnership with our region’s school districts, the Regional College and Career Guide is a consolidated handbook with valuable resources about high school programs of study, college preparation and high-demand careers projected for the region. This information is designed to be used during state-required student guidance sessions known as the Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) process.
Individual Graduation Plans promote the involvement and cooperative effort of parents, teachers and school counselors in assisting students, grades 8-12, in choosing a theme of study, in setting career goals and in developing their individual plans to achieve these goals.
The result is a student who is accountable and better prepared for a seamless transition to relevant employment, further training, or post-secondary study.
The Regional College and Career Guide is greatly enhancing the quality of information provided in these planning sessions and has received statewide attention. When students and parents have the information they need at their fingertips, they develop confidence and accountability for the future as these young people prepare post-high school plans aligned to our region’s high demand jobs.
Thank you to our school districts for helping us compile and organize the information. We commend them for their uniform, comprehensive use of this important tool for all students forming their IGP.
