Charleston Metro Chamber Releases 2020 Legislative Scorecard

The Charleston Metro Chamber has released their 2020 Legislative Scorecard, which tracks and summarizes the Chamber’s advocacy efforts at the State House for the 2020 legislative session.

The Chamber is committed to keeping the Charleston region competitive and improving the business climate. George Ramsey, Chamber Lobbyist and Senior Director of Legislative Relations, is at the State House each day the legislature is in session, advocating on behalf of the region’s business community.

Through the legislative process, the Chamber works on behalf of its members to advocate for policies that contribute to the growth and prosperity of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. This year, the Chamber worked to advance legislation in the following priority areas:

  • Taxes and Regulation
  • State Fiscal Health
  • Talent, Education and Workforce
  • Military Base Retention and Expansion
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Workforce Housing

The Chamber is pleased to report a number of legislative victories that were achieved this session, including the passage of two affordable housing bills, reauthorization of the Angel Investor tax credit, passage of the Military Service, Education and Credentialing Act, adoption of the business license fee reform and a $40 million grant program to assist small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Important legislative wins are not possible without our elected officials. Our delegation was great this year and put the business community front and center,” said George Ramsey. “We cannot thank our delegation enough for their leadership during this difficult year.”

The Chamber was happy to announce that 22 out of the 26 delegation members were named Champions of Business, voting at or above 75% with the Chamber’s Legislative Agenda, aligning with and helping to achieve some of the Chamber’s biggest legislative priorities.
