The Advocates: Lowcountry Rapid Transit Updates

Lowcountry Rapid Transit (LCRT) IS Charleston’s future. The connectivity the Transit line provides will be essential for future business and economic development. As of last week, the region is one step closer to breaking ground on South Carolina’s first bus rapid transit system.

The bus rapid transit line extends from Ladson/Fairgrounds all the way down to the peninsula and the medical district. End to end there is an anticipated 60-minute travel time with service every 10 minutes during peak travel times.

Last Friday, the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) announced that the project has recently reached three major milestones.

  • The environmental document has been signed by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA)!
  • 30% design plans are complete! This includes the system’s start and end points, station locations and station architecture.
  • The BCDCOG is now closer to submitting our application to move into the next phase of work – engineering, which will occur this fall.

Please click the link to watch a visualization of what LCRT will look like in our community. The business community is an important voice for LCRT. Please continue to offer your input and involvement to advance this regional transit system!
