The 2020 legislative session is over and we’ve been keeping score. We have recently released our 2020 Legislative Scorecard, which tracks and summarizes our advocacy efforts at the State House for this year’s session. We are proud to report some major legislative victories and incredible support from our legislators.
Through the legislative process, the Chamber works on behalf of its members to advocate for policies that contribute to the growth and prosperity of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. This year, the Chamber worked to advance legislation in the following priority areas:
- Taxes and Regulation
- State Fiscal Health
- Talent, Education and Workforce
- Military Base Retention and Expansion
- Workforce Housing
We are pleased to report a number of legislative victories that were achieved this session, including the passage of two affordable housing bills, reauthorization of the Angel Investor tax credit, passage of the Military Service, Education and Credentialing Act, adoption of the business license fee reform and a $40 million grant program to assist small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As always, we recognize that these important legislative wins are not possible without our elected officials. We are grateful that our delegation this year put the business community front and center. In fact, 22 out of the 26 delegation members were named Champions of Business.
The Chamber is committed to keeping the Charleston region competitive and improving business climate, and we are excited to end 2020 strong and get to work on our priorities in the 2021 session.
