The Charleston Metro Chamber Political Action Committee (CMCC PAC) announces candidate endorsements for four seats on the Charleston County School Board. After reviewing questionnaires completed by 10 candidates and interviewing eight of them, the Board is endorsing the following candidates for Charleston County School Board:

Kate Darby, the current Board Chair, is the Director of Administration for a local funeral home and Immediate Past Chair in the Rotary Club of St. Andrews. Ms. Darby states that she was elected “with a goal to improve student achievement and the governance of the Board.”

Joyce Green, who is running for an open seat on the school board, has a degree in Business Administration and more than 30 years of experience in executive management. Joyce serves on the boards of the Palmetto Project and New Morning Foundation. Ms. Green asserts that “it’s all about the kids.” All students “deserve a quality education regardless of where they live.”

Cindy Bohn Coats, a previous board chair, works as an office manager and is very active in numerous organizations, many of which focus on substance abuse and addiction recovery. Ms. Coats asserts that “education affects every aspect of our society and it works best when people throughout the community bring their collective expertise to the table.”

Rev. Eric Mack , also an incumbent, works for the Medical University of South Carolina, serves as a pastor at Bethany Baptist Church and is a past treasurer for the Cooper River Baptist Association. Rev. Mack believes “that all children have the potential to succeed and that the role of public education is to help all students learn at high levels so that they can live productive and fulfilling lives.”

The candidate endorsements are based upon alignment with the Chamber’s core values in support of high-quality public education for all students. “All of the candidates endorsed are committed to promoting outstanding student outcomes that prepare our children for meaningful and valued careers after they complete their education,” said Chappy McKay, chairman of the CMCC PAC.
