Charleston Young Professionals (CYP), a division of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, is utilizing their partnership with Charleston Metro Chamber’s Career Academies to create #YPAMA. Career Academies are career-themed schools within high schools, in which the learning environment reflects the atmosphere and expectations of the 21st century workplace. Inspired by the popular “Ask Me Anything” posts on social media, #YPAMA provides students an unfiltered look at what today’s young professionals wish they had known when they were in their shoes.
#YPAMA positions CYP members in local area high schools for quarterly panels, allowing them to share their professional journey with high school juniors and seniors in hopes of inspiring the generation of future leaders. The panelists, coming from a diversity of backgrounds, encourage students to broaden their expectations and find their own path as they begin their next steps after high school. With a rapidly evolving global economy, the race for talent is increasingly competitive, but also diverse in opportunity.
Hanahan High School hosted the first #YPAMA on January 26 with four panelists from the education, hospitality, engineering and banking fields. Students and panelists interacted using a text-in feature where students sent anonymous questions to the panelists. The questions ranged substantially with most focused on education, individual career paths, continued education assistance and overall guidance and suggestions for their future.
“#YPAMA is another way that Charleston Young Professionals show their commitment to ensuring that future generations are aware of career opportunities in our state and knowledgeable of the resources that are available to them regardless of the career path they choose to follow,” said Erica Wright, CYP Director. “We are excited to work alongside the Chamber’s Career Academies program to help re-educate our student’s on the path for success.”
#YPAMA will travel to St. Johns High School, North Charleston High School and Summerville High School throughout the year.
