For over 30 years, the Economic Outlook Conference, presented by South Carolina Federal Credit Union, has stood as a premier gathering of industry experts, economists and business leaders as we delve into the latest insights and projections shaping our region’s economy. As we grapple with workforce and housing challenges, coupled with the potential of recession and heightened inflation, this year’s conference offers a pivotal perspective on our economic landscape.

Featured Speakers:

  • Ben Armstrong is the Executive Director and a Research Scientist at MIT’s Industrial Performance Center. As a co-leader of the Work of the Future initiative, his research and teaching examine how workers, firms, and regions adapt to technological change. With a background at Google Inc. and a PhD from MIT, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the stage. His current projects include a deep dive into generative AI’s impact on work and a forthcoming book on American manufacturing competitiveness.
  • Dr. Mark Witte, a distinguished Professor of Economics at the College of Charleston’s School of Business, will kick off the conference with a recap of the last 12 months. He’ll then delve into the regional forecast for 2024, offering his unparalleled insights and projections.

Presentation Highlights:

  • Comparative Workforce Analysis: Discover how the Charleston metro’s workforce stands in relation to other regions. Uncover areas of excellence and identify potential areas for growth.
  • Pioneering Sustainable Growth: As regions strive to cultivate better jobs, the question arises: where to begin? Explore models for generating sustainable growth that can pave the way for a prosperous future.
  • Navigating Technological Disruption: The realm of technology, including generative AI, holds transformative potential. Delve into its impact on jobs and the imminent changes in the nature of work. Gain insights into the control we wield over the path technology takes.
