About Metro Leadership Visit

Each year, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce conducts the Metro Leadership Visit, in which a delegation of local leaders in the public, private and non-profit sectors travel to other communities to garner insight on best practices and program ideas.

Innovative ideas introduced during the visit may then be adapted and implemented in the Charleston Region. Past visits include Nashville, TN; San Antonio, TX; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Chamber’s Metro Leadership Visit seeks to accomplish two things:

  1. Provide an exclusive experience to deepen bonds between the dynamic regional leaders who play a significant role in shaping the Charleston region.
  2. Enhance our region’s future performance by embracing actions we can import. We’ll use these lessons to advance the Chamber’s key priorities.

Charleston’s economic evolution has positioned our region as a global competitor alongside major metros – one of which is Seattle. Though much larger, Seattle boasts similar economic assets, including aerospace, port and transportation logistics, an exploding tech sector and many of the challenges Charleston faces, including managing growth as well as attracting and retaining young professionals.

The 2016 Metro Leadership Visit was a two-day immersion into Seattle’s development and the challenges and differences of operating on the West Coast versus the East Coast. Through the visit, our region’s leaders had the opportunity to learn from and improve upon Seattle’s progress, by allowing innovative techniques to be applied in Charleston. The visit featured tours with Boeing, Microsoft and the Port of Tacoma to explore the newly formed Northwest Seaport Alliance – the only one like it in the country.

Thirty-six of our region’s business leaders boarded a plane on May 12, launching them into an exploration of Richmond, VA. For three days, the travelers were immersed in Richmond’s progress and had the opportunity to learn more about their efforts in infrastructure, innovation, biotechnology and more. The Metro Leadership Visit provides a unique experience for business leaders to learn, collaborate and form relationships, bringing back valuable insight to help steer the future of the Charleston metro.

Beginning with a stop in Washington, D.C., to meet with members of our State Delegation and staff on Capitol Hill, the traveler’s on the Metro Leadership Visit had a full itinerary. After arriving in Richmond, travelers were given an overview of Rocketts Landing Mixed Use Development, followed by a tour of Stone Brewery.
