Engaging Creative Minds (ECM), in partnership with local school districts, will provide CReATE Kits this summer to support students at risk of falling behind. For equal access and accessibility, kits do not require the internet. Each kit will include all the materials and instructions necessary to engage in hands-on learning experiences for one full week.
Program Overview
Summers at Engaging Creative Minds (ECM) are focused on preventing “summer learning loss” and creating a launch pad for success when the students return to school in the fall. With the closure of schools across the state (and nation), students that traditionally struggle to succeed are at even greater risk. Never before has there been a more urgent need for high quality summer experiences for children. ECM is responding. We are taking the successes of our nationally recognized award-winning Summer STEAM Institute® to design, produce and distribute CReATE Kits to address the current educational crisis experienced by our most underserved (Title I) students.
Current times have created a shift to online, virtual learning. There are real challenges around internet access, particularly in our high-needs rural communities. According to the Federal Communications Commission, roughly 12 million students lack broadband access, and in addition, preliminary COVID-slide estimates predict that students will return in the fall nearly 3/4 to a full year behind in Reading and Math respectively from what we would observe in normal conditions. Here in South Carolina it is reported that 40,000 students have completely fallen out of the communication loop since COVID-19 closures.
ECM, in partnership with local school districts, will provide CReATE Kits to Title I students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Each kit contains rigorous math, science, reading and writing challenges through the Arts. For equal access and accessibility, kits do not require internet access or technology. Each $60 kit includes all the materials and instructions necessary to engage in hands-on learning experiences for one full week.
Program Goal
Join ECM’s Academic Response Team today to help us create opportunities for local youth to succeed next year and beyond! Our goal is to serve as many students as we can this summer and into the 2020-21 school year. For every $60 raised, one child engages in a full week of interactive and fun learning experiences designed to prevent spring and summer learning loss. We hope to raise $60,000 to provide 1,000 kits to the Charleston community!
