Senator Marlon Kimpson and the Gamma Lambda Boule Fraternity Lead Fundraising Effort for Black Elderly Residents

State Senator Marlon Kimpson and the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (“Gamma Lambda Boule”) are leading a fundraising effort to feed Charleston’s elderly black community during the coronavirus pandemic.

In South Carolina, the pandemic has disproportionately impacted older African Americans. To date, the fundraising efforts total more than $16,000. The donations will be used to feed community members residing in Meeting Street Manor, Gadsden Green, and Robert Mill Manor.

The Fields Family Farm, a three generation African American family on Johns Island, will provide fresh produce boxes for the tenants. The boxes will be supplemented with two freezable meals from Charleston’s Butcher & Bee, one pound bags of coffee from California-based Bean Coffee Roasters and bottles of hand sanitizer from Master Growers of California. Heartland
Payment Systems will be providing volunteers and assisting in organizing the distribution of boxes, which will be individually delivered to each residential community by Anthony Frazier of Private & Personal Transportation on Friday, April 24th.
