Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb joined the Chamber’s Regional Policy Committee to share a comprehensive update on the growth and public investments shaping one of the fastest-growing counties in the country.
Cribb highlighted Berkeley County’s rapid population increase, up 31.9% from 2010 to 2020, driven by major development in communities like Cane Bay, Carnes and Nexton. Alongside this growth, the county has made strategic financial moves, including lowering the millage rate to the lowest in South Carolina, tripling the fund balance and growing the general fund from $63 million in 2015 to a projected $138 million in 2025.
Infrastructure remains a top priority, with projects funded through voter-approved one-cent sales tax referendums that have generated over $1 billion. The county is also making major capital investments in road expansions, courthouse and animal center enhancements, a new helipad and public safety upgrades.
In addition, Cribb shared progress on the Greenbelt Program, which is protecting 40% of the county’s land as green space, preserving natural areas amid the county’s continued growth.
