The Lowcountry Rapid Transit project recently received $1.2 million in grant funding to advance TOD planning by focusing efforts on the implementation of affordable housing strategies in the project corridor. The grant helps move LCRT into Phase 3 of its TOD study.
This step forward for the LCRT is incredible news for helping connect our region and bring transit-oriented development to the lowcountry. Making meaningful progress has been at the forefront of the Chamber’s priorities since as early as 2021, when participants in the DC-Fly In met virtually with FTA leadership to lobby for funding of the LCRT. Since this time, the project has remained a fixture of the Chamber’s Transportation and Infrastructure Policy Position, along with additional support and endorsements to secure additional funding.
In addition to support in securing funding, the Chamber has worked alongside BCDCOG to facilitate developer-led workshops on transit-oriented development, to help discuss best practices with stakeholders.
With the launch of People First, the Chamber is excited to continue the support of projects like the LCRT with a focus on Multi-Faceted Regional Transit System, one of the movement’s four pillars. Through the contributions and support of People First, the Chamber will have the opportunity to partner with organizations to help develop long-range plans that will serve everyone in our community, advancing economic mobility and quality of life.
