It is hard for me to believe that I have already been in the Charleston metro for six months. It has been an incredible journey of meeting and learning about businesses and leaders throughout our region.
And I have met many businesses and leaders!
As I reflect on this whirlwind, I would like to share a few observations about the Chamber and our community, specifically around our advocacy efforts.
The Charleston Metro Chamber has a long reputation for having an excellent Business Advocacy program (previously Government Relations). I knew that coming in and, quite frankly, it was one of the items that attracted me to the opportunity.
However, over the past six months, I’ve seen firsthand that this team is even more talented and dedicated than I’d heard.
Our five-member team works constantly to advocate for a prosperous business environment across the Charleston metro. They are working locally, in Columbia and in D.C. with appointed and elected officials to share the concerns and opportunities of the business community and to partner with these individuals to advance our region. This team represents you, the business community, well and we’ll keep investing in the tools they need to be even more effective.
I have also been very pleased to discover that, broadly, our local officials want our businesses to succeed. They want to partner with the Chamber to better understand opportunities to ensure this is a place where businesses can thrive. A thriving economy creates more opportunities for all citizens and should provide additional resources to support the needs of government.
This does not mean we all agree on everything, but there is a real desire to partner for the betterment of the community.
These officials, especially on the local level, recognize that the Chamber can provide access to data and insights which can assist officials with informed decision-making. Just as the business community relies on data every day, elected leaders can also benefit from understanding the broader implications of choices. What may seem like a simple solution can often carry significant, unintended consequences.
By equipping decision-makers with reliable information, the Chamber helps ensure that, even when choices are difficult, they are made in the long-term best interest of our communities.
Lastly, I have been incredibly impressed with our relationship with our military assets – Joint Base Charleston, NIWC and the Coast Guard.
Through our Military Affairs Committee, residing within our Business Advocacy team, the Chamber maintains a high level of collaboration and support with these vital partners. Ensuring their success locally not only strengthens our regional economy but also contributes to the security of our nation.
One of the clearest reminders of the importance of our advocacy work is its impact to our military. Our affordable housing crisis and the ensuing transportation challenges directly impact our military. When they are forced to live far from their bases to find housing, it becomes more than a regional concern; it is a national security issue. Addressing these challenges is essential not only for the well-being of our region but for the strength of our country.
It is an honor to have led the Charleston Metro Chamber for the last six months and I am looking forward to the months and years to come as we work together to initiate, advocate and empower our region towards a more prosperous future.
