Vote ‘YES’ on the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax Referendum

Registered voters in Charleston County will have the opportunity to vote in support of or opposition to a transportation sales tax (TST) referendum on November 5.

Unless you work 100% remotely and never leave your house, you’re aware of the infrastructure challenges Charleston County is facing. We’re in desperate need of our transportation infrastructure and transit operations to keep up with growth, improving bike and pedestrian access in our neighborhoods and making general safety enhancements that help keep people safe.

It is equally important to note that this TST will also support our greenspaces. The Charleston County Greenbelt program, which supports public parks and the preservation of natural resources and habitats throughout the county, would receive $432 million if the referendum passes.

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce is in full support of the referendum and we want to encourage members of the business community to lend their voice and efforts into getting it passed this November.

Here are some talking points to consider and share with others before Election Day:

  • According to the SCDOT, when the Mark Clark Extension is built, travel times for the morning commute are projected to be cut by 75% from Johns Island, 45% from West Ashley and 33% from James Island.
  • Tourists contribute significantly to our local economy. By voting yes, we ensure that visitors help fund the upkeep of our roads and bridges, lightening the burden on local residents while maintaining our infrastructure for all to enjoy.
  • Enhancing CARTA buses and supporting the Lowcountry Rapid Transit project connecting Ladson to downtown Charleston will transform mobility in the Charleston region.
  • This is NOT a new tax, but a continuation of an existing tax.

More talking points and information can be found at the Citizens for Safe Roads website, which recently launched a campaign for the passage of this referendum.
