Ben Navarro to be Recognized with 2026 Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award

Stronger communities are built when opportunities expand, connections deepen and people are brought together in meaningful ways. This kind of impact does not happen by chance. It is the result of visionary leadership and a sustained commitment to investing in both people and place.

In recognition of that impact, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce will honor Ben Navarro with the 2026 Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award, one of the region’s most prestigious recognitions of civic leadership. Established in 1992, the award celebrates individuals whose vision, service and sustained commitment have made a lasting difference in strengthening the Charleston region.

Navarro’s leadership reflects the very essence of the award. His work is not defined by any single initiative, but by a deliberate and consistent approach to creating life-changing opportunities and fostering connections that strengthen the community. Through Beemok, the family office he co-founded, his business and philanthropic efforts are intentionally aligned around that shared purpose.

This commitment comes to life most clearly through his investment in people. In education, Navarro has focused on expanding access and supporting achievement to create stronger pathways for long-term success. Through the Meeting Street Schools network, more than 1,700 students across South Carolina are gaining access to high-quality learning opportunities. That foundation is further strengthened through the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund and Excellence in Teaching Awards, which continue to open doors for students and support educators driving meaningful outcomes.

That same focus on opportunity extends into the region’s economic future. Through Catalyst by Beemok, Navarro is creating pathways for entrepreneurs to access mentorship, funding and meaningful connections, reinforcing Charleston’s long-term competitiveness and supporting the next generation of business leaders.

Just as he invests in people and ideas, Navarro has also made a lasting impact on the places that bring the community together. Through the Beemok Hospitality Collection, he has led transformative investments that enhance how Charleston is experienced, from the revitalization of Charleston Place and the renovation of Credit One Stadium to the creation of American Gardens and the planned transformation of Union Pier into a vibrant waterfront destination. Together, these efforts are strengthening the connections that define the Charleston region.

Complementing these efforts is Navarro’s commitment to well-being and personal development. Through initiatives like Modern Minds, developed in partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina, and the establishment of College of Charleston’s Center for Intentionality, he is advancing a more holistic approach to success that includes mental wellness, purpose and resilience.

“Ben’s leadership reflects a deep and ongoing commitment to expanding opportunity across our region,” said Kevin Sheilley, President and CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. “He has invested in the people and places that strengthen our community and bring individuals together. His work continues to shape a stronger, more connected Charleston for generations to come.”

Navarro began his career on Wall Street, with roles in mortgage trading at Goldman Sachs and as Co-Head of Mortgage Sales and Trading at Citicorp before founding Sherman Financial Group in 1997, where he serves as CEO. As co-founder of Beemok, the family office he established to direct investment and philanthropic work, he has pursued a consistent vision: expand opportunity and bring people together.

As the Chamber recognizes this year’s recipient, Navarro’s work stands as a powerful example of what the Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award represents: a lifetime of leadership that creates opportunity, fosters connection and builds a more vibrant future for the Charleston region.
