End of 2023 Update from CYP Chair Lauren Ellis

Fostering professional growth and cultivating meaningful friendships over the year has been a blessing while serving as the Chair of the 2023 Charleston Young Professionals (CYP) Committee.

The word “impact” comes to mind when reflecting on 2023 for CYP – impact through inspiring change, building community, developing leaders, connecting people, and empowering voices.

In commemorating its 250th Anniversary, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce embraced and anticipated sustained prosperity for the community’s future. As an extension of the Chamber, CYP continued this momentum by providing a platform for forging new connections and exploring topics that transcend the boundaries of our professional lives.

The focus for 2023 was purposeful networking and engagement, leading to 15 events spanning intentional connections, professional development, policy, and service.

Several personal cherished events to highlight throughout the year include:

  • Hosted at Frothy Beard Brewing Company, the 2023 CYP Kick-Off had 167 registered attendees. The event provided the opportunity for new and existing members to network and enjoy delicious food, as well as locally crafted drinks.
  • At Pints & Policies in March, panelists from the beverage industry in the Charleston area provided insight into their experiences collaborating with policymakers amid the constantly evolving alcohol landscape of South Carolina.
  • In June, Tourism in Our Town was held at the Charleston Visitor Center with 80+ attendees. The event provided and celebrated valuable insight into leveraging the unique aspects of our town to attract visitors while maintaining the charm and authenticity that makes Charleston exceptional.
  • The September Kayak and Cleanup event, hosted through Nature Adventures in Shem Creek, seamlessly combined social engagement with an environmental service component, removing over 23 pounds of trash from the waterway.

Each event reinforced the notion that networking doesn’t have to be confined to conventional workspaces—it can happen while making a meaningful and valuable contribution to the community.

Reflecting on my four years with the Committee, CYP has continued to provide a platform for enthusiastic and ambitious individuals to bring about positive change, not just in their careers but also in their community.

I am grateful for the dedicated support of the Chamber Staff, incoming 2024 Chair – Pat Tang, incoming 2024 Co-Chair – Jaimee Salone, and all Committee Members. I am confident that the dynamic drive and success we’ve built will not only be sustained but elevated under their capable leadership.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a bright and prosperous New Year!

Lauren Ellis, 2023 CYP Chair
