The Advocates: Reflecting on Attainable Housing Progress in 2023

August 23, 2022 launched the start of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce housing initiative with the convening of the first Regional Housing Coalition meeting. The coalition was established to be a convener of community members, governments, for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations to unify the region’s efforts to provide attainable housing to all people regardless of neighborhood or individual characteristics. Since its inception, the Regional Housing Coalition has actively facilitated collaborative initiatives to streamline attainable housing efforts across the Charleston metro area. As we approach the conclusion of this year and take a moment to cherish and share time with our loved ones, we reflect on the achievements of the Regional Housing Coalition in 2023.

  • Partnered with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and the Charleston Trident Associations of REALTORS (CTAR) to host a Regional Planning Summit, generating participation from planning and zoning leaders as well as local elected officials.
  • Launched the first ever Attainable Housing Week.
  • Advocated for the adoption of the Charleston County Housing Our Future Plan.
  • Advocated for House Bill SO284 to include the use of Accommodation Tax dollars for workforce housing development. The bill was passed and signed into law on May 19, 2023.
  • Advocated for Charleston County to allocate $20 million of ARPA funding for housing initiatives.
  • Established the Regional Housing Coalition as a regional convener and advocate for attainable housing.
  • Assisted local municipalities in the discussion and development of attainable housing efforts.
  • Adoption of guiding principles for regional advocacy.

It is through the work of our volunteer leaders that the coalition has been able to actively engage in housing strategies and initiatives throughout the region. These volunteers are able to bring their unique perspectives to the challenges our region faces and become empowered voices that effect change within their communities. Without their tireless efforts, the accomplishments we have achieved over the past 12 months would not be possible.

Looking forward to 2024
As we embark on the new year, the coalition will continue to advocate for the development of more attainable housing in the Charleston metro area. At the core of the work taking place are seven principles that guide our mission.

Regional Housing Coalition Guiding Principles

  1. Support policies that increase housing supply.
  2. Support policies that decrease the cost of housing.
  3. Support policies that encourage free market solutions.
  4. Support policies that support unique limited government solutions where the free market is unable to perform.
  5. Support inclusionary zoning policies.
  6. Support and encourage transit-oriented development.
  7. Support the promotion of regional solutions and fostering conversations between municipalities and counties to convene groups to solve problems.

Advocacy is a powerful strategy within coalition building, enabling diverse groups to work together towards common goals, influence decision-makers and create positive change in policies and practices. Our advocacy efforts will continue in 2024.
