The Advocates: Welcoming Our Region’s New Mayors

The first of a new year can be exciting for many people, but perhaps none are more excited than three newly-elected mayors. Reggie Burgess, William Cogswell and Russ Touchberry were all recently sworn in to lead the City of North Charleston, City of Charleston and Town of Summerville, respectively.

With several hundred in attendance, including other local and state elected officials, Reggie Burgess took his oath of office at the North Charleston Convention Center. In his remarks, we heard similar themes from his campaign: community is everything. Mayor Burgess has indicated on several occasions that he will work tirelessly to make North Charleston the pride of South Carolina. Public safety, jobs, infrastructure and schools are just a few of the priorities for the incoming administration.

William Cogswell was sworn in on a chilly afternoon outside of Charleston City Hall. Even with the impact of the President of the United States being in town, many in the community came out to witness the ceremony. Mayor Cogswell was not shy about acknowledging the work he faces. Sea level rise, development and traffic are all factors that will impact the City of Charleston. Mayor Cogswell recognizes that Charleston is unique and therefore requires unique solutions. If the early announcement of his administration staff is any indication, Mayor Cogswell is ready to hit the ground running.

After serving as a councilman for the Town of Summerville, Russ Touchberry is familiar with the process of being sworn in at their council chambers. With a steadily growing population of over 50,000, Mayor Touchberry comes in ready to work for the needs of this increasingly popular town. The mayor plans to continue building on his work as councilman regarding transportation, smart growth and supporting businesses.

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce wholeheartedly congratulates each of the newly elected mayors and councilmembers. We recognize that the success of the mayor is the success of the community and the Chamber is committed to supporting Mayors Burgess, Cogswell and Touchberry as they serve in office. We look forward to what we can accomplish for the business community and the Lowcountry as a whole in these partnerships.
