Chamber Announces Second Event in the 2024 Impact Series

The Chamber is excited to announce our second Impact Series event of the year, Impact: Attainable Housing Solutions.

Scheduled for May 2, at the Hilton Garden Inn Charleston/Mt. Pleasant, Impact: Attainable Housing Solutions will welcome experts from our region who are each taking their own approach to overcoming the attainable housing crisis that impacts our region.

Attainable Housing Shortcomings Impact Everyone
A lack of attainable housing may seem like an issue that only impacts those seeking stable, affordable housing to purchase or rent but the impact goes far beyond those directly affected. As residents are required to live further away from the communities in which they work and engage, more cars are on major roads for longer amounts of time, leading to increased traffic across the region. As individuals and families spend more than 30% of their income on housing expenses, less money is available to be spread across businesses in our region.

There Isn’t Just One Solution
Across our region and state, both public and private sector organizations are taking steps to help alleviate the stress attainable housing causes to citizens. The great news is there are numerous solutions that can be implemented to help reduce the strain. At Impact: Attainable Housing Solutions, we’ll hear from organizations that are taking three different approaches to driving solutions.

  • Henrietta Woodward, Executive Director at Community First Land Trust will share insights into the impact land trusts have on creating permanent, affordable housing aimed at helping marginalized communities build generational wealth.
  • Tammy Stevens Wilson & Tony Berry, Partners at Prosperity Builders, will discuss the opportunities and advantages of developing a wide array of affordably priced homes in thriving communities, allowing for wealth building opportunities.
  • Jeremy Erling, Executive Director at the North Charleston Housing Authority, will speak to the growing trend of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and how the creation of walkable communities in close proximity to mass transit systems can positively impact attainable housing development.
