Charleston Animal Society Seeks Facilities Manager

Charleston Animal Society is seeking an experienced, hands-on Facilities & Grounds Manager to oversee the maintenance, safety, and functionality of our multi-campus animal care facilities. This leadership role ensures a clean, compliant, and well-maintained environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

  • Full-time with benefits, starting at $55,000 per year
  • Schedule may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed
  • Travel throughout the Tri-County area required. North Charleston, Berkeley Campus & Bear Greer Memorial Cat Sanctuary.

Position Summary

The Facilities & Grounds Manager is responsible for all building systems, grounds maintenance, preventive maintenance programs, vendor coordination, and emergency preparedness across multiple campuses. This position supervises daily facilities operations and serves as the primary on-call contact for alarms and facility emergencies.

Facilities & Systems Oversight

  • Monitor and maintain HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire suppression, and security systems
  • Ensure proper operation of kennels, drainage, ventilation, sanitation, and animal housing infrastructure
  • Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules
  • Respond to urgent and after-hours facility issues

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform general maintenance including electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, drywall, masonry, and structural repairs
  • Maintain washers/dryers, hydraulic doors, lighting, irrigation systems, and air filtration systems
  • Oversee vehicle fleet maintenance (vans, trailers, forklift)
  • Maintain public spaces, restrooms, warehouse, and storage areas

Grounds & Campus Management

  • Oversee landscaping and tree trimming vendors
  • Maintain parking lots, sidewalks, dog park, and outdoor areas
  • Conduct regular pressure washing and exterior upkeep
  • Ensure overall campus cleanliness and organization

Vendor & Project Management

  • Manage contractors and service providers
  • Coordinate outsourced repairs and capital improvements
  • Maintain inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment
  • Communicate facility needs and compliance concerns to senior leadership

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure OSHA and safety compliance standards are met
  • Support disaster preparedness and emergency response plans
  • Participate in off-site event support as needed

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of facilities, maintenance, or property management experience
  • Experience managing multi-building campuses preferred
  • Experience in animal shelter, veterinary, healthcare, or high-sanitation environments strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety compliance standards
  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and project management skills
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Proficiency with maintenance tracking software and basic computer systems
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and demonstrate initiative

Physical & Professional Requirements

  • Ability to lift, climb ladders, operate power equipment, and work in indoor/outdoor environments
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and solutions-oriented
