McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture Wins Two AIA SC Design Awards for The Continuum and Richland Library Main

McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture earned two awards at AIA South Carolina’s 2020 Design Awards, which were held virtually on December 03, 2020.

The Continuum received The Design Award / Honor for Adaptive Reuse, a transformational building in Lake City, shared by Florence-Darlington Technical College and Francis Marion University. The project was made possible by the support of the Greater Lake City Community Foundation.

The Continuum

The new building was adapted from a former big-box retail shell adjacent to downtown and now features an open and inviting design. From site plan to exterior façade to interior finishes, the design is inspired by imagery of wood slat construction evident on the tobacco barns and other farmland outbuildings dotting the landscaping, even referencing the iconic tobacco “stick houses” built in the field during harvest.

Richland County Library

Richland County Library’s main location received a Design Award / Honor for Interior Architecture. Our library design team worked alongside BOUDREAUX, our team’s leader and architect of record, to create a vibrant and dynamic experience for library staff and visitors. Together, we re-envisioned the state’s flagship and largest public library. Taking cues from other building types, each level has a distinct character that actively engages user and fosters learning, creating, and sharing.
