Watch: Honoring Ben Navarro’s Leadership, Impact and Commitment to Citizenship

The sound of applause, the strum of a mandolin and the soft rhythm of ballet slippers played a soundtrack for an evening centered on celebration and connection at the 2026 Honors.

Throughout the evening, the program highlighted six award recipients whose leadership and impact continue to shape the Charleston region. To close the ceremony, attention turned to the presentation of the Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award to this year’s recipient, Ben Navarro.

Recognition of Ben’s impact on Charleston began with a tribute video featuring voices from across Navarro’s work and partnerships. U.S. Senator Tim Scott, Tamil Goodson of Meeting Street Academy, Dr. David J. Cole of MUSC, George D. Johnson of Johnson Development Associates and President Andrew T. Hsu of the College of Charleston shared reflections on the leadership of Ben, his wife Kelly and the broader influence of Beemok across the region.

The video set the stage for Tim Heichelbech of Choate Construction to share his reflections from partnering with Ben, before Navarro took the stage to accept the award.

In his remarks, Navarro reflected on what makes Charleston strong: a shared commitment to citizenship. Drawing on his family’s arrival nearly 20 years ago and the example set by those who welcomed them, he offered a clear call to action. Progress does not require agreement on every issue, but it does require a willingness to lead with respect, responsibility and a commitment to the community.

If you missed this year’s Honors, watch the video below to experience one of the evening’s defining moments.
