Developing and retaining a talented workforce is a challenge the Charleston region continues to face year-after-year. As challenges arise, such as infrastructure, housing attainability and quality of life, the work of the Chamber, along with the Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA), becomes crucial in ensuring a pipeline of high potential and qualified workers are ready to step into the constantly growing workforce in the region.

In 2022, the CRDA, in partnership with the Chamber, launched the Charleston Intern Network with the goal of connecting with the gifted students who make their way to Charleston each summer to participate in the many internship opportunities available. Connecting with these students in their transition from academics to professional pursuits has provided a window into the amenities, lifestyle and opportunities which Charleston can provide them with. The goal of the Charleston Intern Network is to introduce students to the opportunities that await them in hopes that they will decide to call Charleston home and continue to fill the talent pipeline and keep industry thriving.

This year, nearly 200 students from over 50 different colleges and universities participated in three events, planned to help form connections, learn from young professionals who have faced the difficult transition into the workforce and highlight the many venues and amenities that make Charleston a world-class city. Events included a young professionals panel, which provided insight into life in Charleston, career advancement opportunities and obstacles that may come in a transition process. In addition, interns had the opportunity to attend a RiverDogs game and participate in several networking events, free of charge, with the opportunity to connect with fellow students who are in the same phase of life.
