This year the Chamber, in partnership with the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors (CTAR) and the Charleston Homebuilders Association (CHBA), launched the Civic Leaders Academy. The Academy is an advanced and informative public service training program designed to identify, cultivate and train individuals from across the region to both run for office and serve on appointed boards and commissions. The inaugural class learned about data-driven decision making, developed strong peer relationships and made valuable community connections.
After their training, several Civic Leaders made the decision to run for office for the first time or to seek an appointment on a board or commission. Learn more about these Civic Leaders Academy Graduates below:

Michelle Brandt is an environmental scientist, wife and mother of two young children. Michelle is enthusiastic about serving the local community and is currently serving as a Commissioner on the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission. She is running as a Democrat for State House District 114.

Over the past 25 years, Ron Jaruzel has used his civil engineering fundamentals to manage successful construction projects throughout the lowcountry valued at approximately half a billion dollars. Ron, his wife, Dr. Candace Jaruzel, and two daughters live on James Island and are active members in the community. He is running for Commissioner of the James Island Public Service District (JIPSD).
